Reading and Phonics in Reception at St Georges Primary School
Phase 2
In the Autumn Term we cover the following letters:
- Set 1 – s a t p
- Set 2 – i n m d
- Set 3 – g o c k
- Set 4 – ck e u r
- Set 5 – h b f ff l ll ss
It is really important to pronounce letters correctly. Follow the link below to the Parent Information page for ELS which includes the correct pronunciation of each sound.

Glossary Phoneme – a single sound that can be made by saying one or more letters e.g. saying c or ck out loud Grapheme – written letters or groups of letters which represent a single sound e.g. reading and writing c o ck. Digraph – two letters which go together to make one sound e.g. ‘sh’ in the word ‘shut’. Trigraph – three letters which go together to make one sound e.g. ‘igh’ in the word ‘sigh’. Blending – combining broken up sounds to make a word e.g. you hear ‘p-i-g’ and you merge these sounds together to make the single word ‘pig’. It is a key skill of early reading. Segmenting – saying the individual sounds in a word and then writing the letters that represent them e.g. sounding out p-i- g and writing pig. Harder to read/ Harder to spell words – words that cannot be sounded out. |
How can I help at home?
There are so many ways that you can help at home with phonics. Here are a few ideas from phonics expert Laura Sharp.
Most importantly, keep reading with your child every day. Let them read to you. The school will provide you with age appropriate books that will help to develop their phonic skills and word recognition. Each book should be read two or three times. Also, make sure that you are reading more complex books to them and that they are continuing to hear stories and other texts read aloud.

Children in the early years develop the concept of Maths Mastery through Maths talk, practicing the skills they’ve learned during play, and developing number sense. The key to introducing mastery in the early years is to keep activities fun and part of your daily routine.
