Our School

St. George’s Primary School occupies a central location within the Tophill area on Portland. 

It remains the popular Primary School on the Island and has two pre-schools on site – ‘Little Dragons’ and ‘Haylands.’  St George’s Primary School’s extended school provision includes the pre-schools’ facilities which accommodate a breakfast club, early years provision and a wide range of after school clubs.

The present accommodation boasts refurbished and well-equipped classrooms with excellent teaching and learning resources. The accommodation is light and spacious with two large halls used for whole school and Key Stage assemblies, PE, drama and hot meal provision.  There are two large playgrounds and a field spanning the length of St George’s providing two football pitches and ample room for athletics and field games.

The School comprises of a large double unit for reception children, individual classrooms throughout Key Stages One and Two, a well resourced modern library, a fully equipped Learning Centre and Activities room, excellent IT provision, changing rooms and a heated outdoor swimming pool.  Great care has been taken to ensure that the learning environment is updated, well resourced and enriched to meet the needs of our pupils!

Car parking spaces are available for staff and visitors.  Parents are requested to drive carefully on Park Road and Clarence Road, showing consideration for pupils and families walking to and from school.  Parents are advised to not drive on the school premises to drop off or collect children.  When pupils come to school in the morning they should enter by the lower or main gate at 8.45am.  By 9am the gates will be locked and admission to the school will then be through the main entrance.  A full security system is in place and all visitors must report to the office where they will need to sign in.

The Key Stage One playground has been developed in conjunction with Haylands Pre-School to provide a joint use soft play area with a variety of play equipment.  A new outdoor learning area has been designed for Reception pupils. The balcony which overlooks the Key Stage One playground now has a new canopy umbrella on one side and a new canopy on the other. The Key Stage One playground has also been extended onto the field and has a new shelter.

The Key Stage Two playground has a large ball play area ‘the cage’, a MUGA (Multi-use games area), a shelter and a multi-use pavilion and Forest School area.
